Richard Allen Essay Contest Objective and scripture reference Esther 4:14, “For Such a time as this”

Students in grades 7 through 12  are invited to submit an essay on Richard Allen, the founder of the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church. The essay should focus on Allen’s leadership skills, particularly during the yellow fever epidemic of 1793. Students should explore how Allen’s actions, decisions, and values during this challenging time exemplified strong leadership.

Essays should provide a detailed analysis of Allen’s impact on his community and the significance of his contributions during the epidemic. Submissions should demonstrate a thorough understanding of the historical context and the qualities that made Allen an influential leader.

 

Contest Qualifications Contest Rules
Contest is open to all students in Grades 7-12 who attend public, private, parochial, or home schools in the Greater Rochester area. §  Contestants must write an original essay.

§  Essays must be between 700-1000 words.

§  Essays must be typed and double-spaced.

§  All quotations and ideas must be cited. Failure to do so will result in disqualification.

§  Essays must be submitted to RichardAllen@BaberRochester.org no later than Sunday February 2, 2024.

§

Judging Other Information
§  A panel of judges will anonymously score each essay based on a rubric.

§  Judges won’t discuss or compare essays until all the essays have been judged.

§  We reserve the right to edit, publish, or duplicate all essays received.

§  There is no fee to enter this contest.  Prizes will be awarded to the first, second, and third place winners.

§  The first, second, and third-place winners will be asked to present their essays at the Sunday worship service on Sunday, February 2, 2025.
